All About Leashes! by guest blogger Vladimira Tolmaciova

A dog leash is one of the most important tools you have. In most places, it’s even required by law when a dog is outside.

A dog leash is an essential tool to use during the early days of puppy-hood to keep them safe and aid you in training. It is  a convenient tool for control and management of a dog throughout the rest of his life.  However, the best dog  leash in the world won’t matter if your dog is untrained. It is not a substitute for the control and relationship you form through training sessions. A leash is a necessary item to keep your pup safe and by your side while teaching him the manners he needs to be the dog you want him to be.

You could easily become overwhelmed by so many options available in pet store whether online or in brick -mortar shops near you. You should  consider what you’re using it for, based on it determine the ideal length, width and  most importantly the material. We understand that all those options create a lot of choices, which is why we’ve written this blog post for you!

1.) STANDARD DOG LEASHES

The standard  dog leash is likely what you think of when you imagine a leash. They are a solid or braided piece of material (typically nylon) and come in lengths ranging from 4 to 8 ft. Standard leashes are also available in reflective material, which is perfect for dog owners that walk at night or in the early mornings.

2.) RETRACTABLE DOG LEASHES

Retractable leashes are one of the most controversial parts of the dog leash world. While they’re popular with many dog owners, experts caution against them because of the limited control that they give you over your dog. Additionally, there are some potential dangers like rope burn if you grab the leash while your dog attempts to run away. Retractable leashes are best for dogs that are well-behaved on the leash, and owners who are comfortable giving their dog more lead-room.

3.) ADJUSTABLE DOG LEASHES

Adjustable dog leads might be the best fit for people that want the flexibility of retractable leashes and the control of a standard leash. These leashes can go between 3 and 6ft, by adding or removing loops or clips along the length.

If you want a shorter leash for training and a longer leash for more freedom while on walks, the adjustable dog leash can give you the best of both worlds.

DOG LEASH MATERIALS

  1. LEATHER

It is our favorite material for leashes. It can be incredibly strong. There are many many leather dog  leashes available on the market right now. I’ll discuss some of them with you a bit later in this blog post.

What to look for and what to look out for when it comes to leather? We strongly suggest you to watch the video below.

2.) NYLON

It is probably the most common material used to make leashes – it’s cheap, strong and comes in every color of the rainbow. It also can cause a mean “leash burn” on your hand if you have a strong dog that pulls suddenly when it sees a cat or a squirrel. Nylon is good as a first leash for a puppy, since it’s very light.

3.) METAL ( CHAIN LEASH)

It is another cheap choice that are less-than-desirable. Again, chain is hard on the hands, and can take out a dog’s tooth if it happens to get stuck in their mouth.

However chains are ideal for dogs that chew through other leash materials. Because they are metal, these leashes can be hefty. For a larger or stronger breed, this weightier dog leash could be a good fit.

4.) COTTON

It is a soft material with a decent amount of give, however it is often difficult to find. Cotton leashes also have the risk of rope burn, but they are excellent in water.

We recommend to use a leather dog leash for a basic obedience training and dog walking. However I understand each case is different with individual requirements, so I strongly recommend to ask a dog trainer, like Ted!
